1. What is Ketoconazole?

Physician Promise brand that includes ketoconazole: PhysiPro Zole™

It is an antifungal but when prescribed at 2% level it is more effective but requires physician approval. It has been shown to stimulate hair growth.

Mechanism of action: Ketoconazole inhibits ergosterol synthesis by interacting with 14-alpha demethylase, a cytochrome P-450 enzyme that is necessary for the conversion of lanosterol to ergosterol, an essential component of the membrane.

2. What does Ketoconazole do for my hair?

Ketoconazole has antiandrogen effects and can stimulate hair growth. It is also effective if you have seborrheic dermatitis. Ketoconazole blocks enzyme 5AR which is responsible for converting testosterone to DHT which occurs in androgenic alopecia.

3. Is Ketoconazole FDA approved?

Yes, Ketoconazole is an antifungal. When prescribed solely for hair loss it is a prescription that needs physician approval.
